Live Online Lessons
You're probably familiar with video conferencing services such as SKYPE, OOVOO, and Apple's FaceTime. Did you know that these services are a great way to connect with teachers and coaches around the world? Students and teachers have been connecting with each other, both in one-on-one and group sessions to share, learn, and grow.
Is video conferencing right for you? Some of the benefits include:
- It's Real-Time.
Get immediate feedback and take the session in the direction you want to go at any time. Unlike watching a video, you get to ask specific questions, clarify meaning, and can tailor the experience to suite your particular learning style.
- Audio and Video Included.
Unlike phone calls, you get to see and hear the other person, so sharing visual information, such as an instrumental technique, is easy, not to mention getting to see facial expressions, which enhance communication and meaning.
- No Travel Required.
One of the biggest hurdles to learning from various teachers is travel and accommodation costs. While video conferencing is not as personal as in-person meetings, it costs far less and is a great way to connect with people all over the world. The only significant challenge is scheduling your meeting around the time difference between regions.
- It's a Custom Experience.
A common way to learn from teachers is to participate in a conference or retreat, but even in those situations, you are part of a group of students and the schedule, format, and curriculum are fixed. It is still a primarily a receptive experience, like watching a video, with the exception of getting to ask questions and possibly get some personal attention (if the group is small enough). With One-on-One SKYPE, you get to choose the topic(s) and goals of your session, which makes it all about YOU.
I've been offering SKYPE sessions for students from all over the world, both as individual and group sessions. While there's nothing quite like meeting in person, it's a fantastic alternative that saves time, money, and offers some real benefits over books and videos.
